Why is lighting & shading such a pain in ass to understand?

I feel you. I try to understand by using a consistent light source, and drawing 3d shapes to create objects. But that's only if I want to create a unified perspective! Light bounces all over the place IRL, so sometimes experimenting can make you find a unique approach...
